Warum für uns mit „Cosma“ eine neue Ära beginnt
Seit ich 2019 zum Sockenstricken fand, bin ich auf der Suche nach einem veganen Sockengarn, denn schließlich hatte ich meinen Lebensweg bis dahin bestens mit gekauften Socken aus Baumwolle beschritten. Ich war so naiv zu glauben, dass ich einfach so weitermachen könnte, nur eben mit selbstgestrickten Modellen. Denkste, Puppe!
Auch nach fünf Jahren intensiven Suchens und gewissenhaften Testens konnte ich bislang am Markt noch kein veganes Sockengarn entdecken, das meinen Ansprüchen genügt. Entweder gefällt mir nicht, wie sich das Garn beim Tragen verhält oder ich finde die Färbungen schlimm. Und das, obwohl mir als Garn-Detektivin nichts entgeht, wirklich nicht mal das kleinste Knäuel irgendwo auf der Welt, das auch nur den Anschein macht, das von mir, von dir als Tierhaar-Allergiker:innen oder Veganer:innen so ersehnte Material zu sein.
Hinterm Horizont geht‘s weiter
Doch – oh Wunder – sobald ich das Thema Sockenstricken hinter mir lasse, breitet sich vor mir ein Universum voller hochwertiger Handstrickgarne aus, unter denen auch vegane Schönheiten sind. Grund für mich, über den Tellerrand hinauszusehen. Nach knapp zwei Jahren seit der Gründung unseres Webshops, der mit Sockengarn begann, ist es ein guter Zeitpunkt, den Blick zu weiten. Kurz: Wir wollen künftig auch Garne ins Programm nehmen, mit denen du „alles, außer Socken“ stricken oder häkeln kannst.
Beginn einer neuen Ära
Mit „Cosma“ vom deutschen Unternehmen „Lamana“ machen wir den ersten Schritt, unseren Shop breiter aufzustellen und das Versprechen, das in unserem Namen „Knitter’s Heaven“ steht, mit Leben zu füllen.
Baumwolle der Extraklasse
Auf der Suche nach einem veganen Material in DK-Stärke für gestrickte Wärmflaschenbezüge habe ich dieses herrliche Garn gefunden, das zu 60 % aus Bio-Baumwolle und zu 40 % aus Modal (Viskose) besteht. Mit 100 Metern Lauflänge auf 50 g ist das 8-fädige Garn geradezu ideal dafür. Bei seiner Baumwolle handelt es sich um nichts Geringeres als Pima Baumwolle, die zum Edelsten zählt, was auf „Bäumen“ wächst. Sie reift unter optimalen klimatischen Bedingungen in den besten Lagen Perus heran, wird schonend von Hand gepflückt, um ihr leuchtendes Weiß zu erhalten, und ergibt dank ihrer Faserlänge von bis zu 40 mm ein strapazierfähiges und langlebiges Garn.
Nachhaltige Viskose aus Österreich
Das Modal verleiht dem hochwertigen Garn einen feinen Schimmer und ich wiederum verleihe ihm auf meiner Weichheits-Skala „6 Wölkchen“, denn es fühlt sich angenehm weich an. Hotty Leaf
Die „Cosma“ strickt sich sehr flüssig und ergibt ein gleichmäßiges, klares Maschenbild. Wie du im Moodboard sehen kannst, habe ich aus dem Garn plastikfreie, vegane Wärmflaschenbezüge gestrickt, die unter anderem perfekt für Babys und Kleinkinder sind. Für den Anfang haben wir eine skandinavisch inspirierte Farbpalette gewählt, weil diese ausgesprochen gut in moderne Wohn- und Kinderzimmer passt. Es ist sehr wahrscheinlich, dass eine Hotty in diesen unaufgeregten Farben als Geschenk besonders gut ankommt ;-) Und wieso ist rot dabei? Für den Fall, dass du eine vegane „Hotty Love“ (Wärmflaschenhülle in Herzform) stricken möchtest.
Die Anleitung „Hotty Leaf“ (Leaf engl. für Blatt) ist übrigens die vegane Version der Anleitungen „Hotty Eight“ bzw. „Hotty Pure“. Aber wieso habe ich dann überhaupt die „Hotty Leaf“ gemacht? Da ich als Vegetarierin keine Kochbücher mag, in denen Fleischgerichte vorkommen, hat mich diese Sichtweise dazu inspiriert, dir als Veganer:in eine rein pflanzliche Strick-Anleitung anzubieten, ganz ohne tierische Zutaten (Wolle). Gleichzeitig möchte ich darauf hinweisen, dass alle Hotty-Anleitungen (außer der kommenden Hotty Six) mit der „Cosma“ umgesetzt werden können. Wie wäre es zum Beispiel mit einer „Hotty Cape“?
Alles außer Socken
Zum Abschluss möchte ich die Macher:innen der „Cosma“ zu Wort kommen lassen, indem ich zitiere, was die Firma „Lamana“ zum Produkt sagt:

Die Mischung aus Pima-Baumwolle und Modal macht das Garn besonders atmungsaktiv und ermöglicht eine hohe Feuchtigkeitsaufnahme bei schneller Trocknung. Daher eignet sich COSMA hervorragend für leichten Sommerstrick. Luftige Tops, Pullover und Jäckchen, die sich sehr angenehm direkt auf der Haut tragen lassen und einen tollen Fall haben, Loch- und Strukturmuster kommen sehr schön zum Ausdruck. Pflegeleicht und in der Maschine waschbar, ist COSMA ebenso für Baby- und Kinderstrick eine hervorragende Wahl und eignet sie zudem auch sehr gut zum Häkeln.
Pflege: COSMA kann im Woll-/Feinwaschprogramm in der Waschmaschine bei 30° gewaschen werden. Wir empfehlen die Verwendung eines neutralen, milden Woll- oder Feinwaschmittels ohne Enzyme und Weichmacher, in sehr geringer Dosierung. Das Strickstück anschließend schonend und nicht unter direkter Sonneneinstrahlung liegend trocknen.“ Zitat Ende.
Die Garn-Detektei ruht nicht!
Was das Sockengarn betrifft, bleibe ich in meiner Funktion als Garn-Detektivin natürlich weiter am Ball. Ich gebe die Hoffnung nicht auf, eines schönen Tages das perfekte vegane Sockengarn zu entdecken. Zum Beispiel stimmt mich die Food-Branche zuversichtlich, die mit Mut zum Risiko, jeder Menge Kreativität und dem Wunsch, die stetig wachsende Gruppe Menschen, die vegane Produkte mögen, zu bedienen. Fast täglich wächst das Angebot an veganen Lebensmitteln in toller Qualität. Das sollte doch auch in der Textil-Branche möglich sein. Gebt euch mal Mühe, ihr Produktmanager:innen da draußen! Why "Cosma" marks a new era for us
Ever since I started knitting socks in 2019, I've been looking for a vegan sock yarn, because after all, I had been walking happily through this world in store-bought cotton socks.
and I was naive enough to think that I could just carry on that way, only with self-knitted ones. Dream on, baby!
After five years of searching and testing, I have yet to find a vegan sock yarn that meets my requirements. Either I don't like the way the yarn feels when worn, or I don't like the way it's coloured. And that's despite the fact that, as a yarn detective, nothing escapes me, not even the tiniest ball of yarn in the world that even resembles the material that I or you, as a vegan with an allergy to animal hair, so desperately want.
There's More Behind The Horizon
But - miracle of miracles - as soon as I leave sock knitting behind me, a universe full of high quality hand knitting yarns unfolds before me, including vegan beauties. Reason enough for me to think outside the box. After almost two years since the launch of our web shop, which started with sock yarn, it is a good time to broaden our Horizon. In short, in the future we would like to include yarns with which you can knit or crochet "anything but socks".
The Dawning of a New Era
With "Cosma" by the German company "Lamana" we are taking the first step in expanding our shop and bringing the promise of our name "Knitter's Heaven" to life.
First-class Cotton
Searching for a DK weight vegan yarn to knit hot water bottle covers, I found this wonderful yarn made from 60% organic cotton and 40% modal (viscose). At 100 metres in a 50g ball, the 8-ply yarn is ideal for the job. Its cotton is nothing less than Pima cotton, one of the finest cottons that can be found anywhere. It matures in the finest climatic conditions in the top locations of Peru, is gently hand-picked to maintain its bright white colour and, with a fibre length of up to 40 mm, produces a durable and long-lasting yarn.
Sustainable Viscose Fibres From Austria
The modal gives the high quality yarn a fine sheen and I give it 6 clouds on my softness scale because it feels so pleasantly soft. Hotty Leaf
Cosma knits very smoothly and has an even, clear stitch. As you can see on the mood board, I have used the yarn to knit plastic-free, vegan hot water bottle covers, perfect for babies and toddlers. We chose a Scandinavian-inspired colour palette to start with, as it looks great in modern living rooms and nurseries. It is very likely that a Hotty in these understated colours will be a very welcomed gift ;-) And why red? In case you want to knit a vegan Hotty Love (a hot water bottle cover in the shape of a heart).
By the way, the "Hotty Leaf" pattern is the vegan version of the "Hotty Eight" and "Hotty Pure" patterns. But why did I make the "Hotty Leaf" in the first place? As a vegetarian, I don't like cookbooks that include meat dishes, this perspective inspired me to offer you, as a vegan, a purely plant-based knitting pattern, without any animal ingredients (wool). At the same time I would like to point out that all the Hotty patterns (except the forthcoming "Hotty Six") can be knitted with the "Cosma". How about a "Hotty Cape", for example?
Anything But Socks
Finally, I would like to let the creators of ‘Cosma’ have their say by quoting what the company ‘Lamana’ says about the product:
"The modal, a modern, synthetically obtained natural fiber made of 100% natural beech wood cellulose, is sourced from Austria in sustainably certified quality. The blend of pima cotton and modal makes the yarn particularly breathable and allows high moisture absorption with rapid drying. Therefore, COSMA is ideal for light summer knits. The yarn detective agency is never at rest!
As for the sock yarn, I will of course continue to keep an eye out in my role as yarn detective. I haven't given up hope of finding the perfect vegan sock yarn one day. The food industry, for example, gives me confidence. With its willingness to take risks, its creativity and its desire to serve the ever-growing group of people who enjoy vegan products. The range of quality vegan food is growing almost daily. The same should be possible in the textile industry. Make an effort, all you product managers out there! The time has come for it!
